Work To Weekend: Plaid Ankle Pants + Tips To Negotiating A Job Offer

You have worked your tail off looking for a new job, finally you got a call back from the company you really want to work for, you crushed the interviews and then landed a job offer. Now what?!

Today I am sharing 4 things you can negotiate when landing a job offer and also a perfect pair of plaid pants that will make you feel like a boss!

It is important to remember that whether your job offer is from a small business or large corporation, they still have a quota to meet and giving you a higher salary just isn’t possible all the time.

Trust me, it isn’t always about the money. The flexibility, benefits and the people you work with make a huge difference too. I took a big pay cut switching companies and it ended up being the best team and company that I ever worked for.

Salary increases and more PTO can always be discussed at annual reviews but don’t wait until that time comes to ask for something. Asking for something when you first get the job offer is the perfect time to set yourself up in a good position. Personally, I think it’s easier to ask for more vacation time at the initial job offer than at your annual review a year later.

4 Things You Can Negotiate When Landing a Job Offer

  1. Additional Vacation Time – if the new job can’t meet your salary expectations or other criteria, asking for an additional week off is often a logical compromise. When asking for this I would also suggest stating how you will always make sure projects and assignments are done or being taken care of when you are away. The last thing you want to do is make your soon to be new boss think you just have vacation on your mind (even though that might really be the case lol).
  2. Working Virtually – If your new position allows it, asking to work from home one or two days a week is a great perk. Remember to back up your “ask” letting them know you will always be available when working virtually. The last thing your boss wants is to let you work from home and then not be able to get a hold of you. Another fact is that working from home allows you to avoid in-office interruptions so you should point that out too.
  3. Tuition Reimbursement – If you are in school or wanting to go back to school, asking for tuition reimbursement should definitely be brought up. I have had friends that were working and going to school and had no idea that their company even offered tuition reimbursement because they never asked or looked into it. While the tuition reimbursement isn’t the increased salary you were looking for, the money you will save is a benefit just as great!
  4. Daycare Reimbursement – Yes, this is a thing you guys. Your company may not be able to cover all of daycare costs but they may be able to reimburse you a fraction of it and I know all you mama’s with babies in daycare feel me when I say “I’ll take what I can get!”.

No matter what additional benefits you are requesting, remember to be reasonable and be willing to negotiate. They may not be willing to give you an additional 7 days vacation right off the bat but if they offer you 4, you should consider that they are trying to “meet you in the middle”.

I know it’s easier said than done, but I took a chance on moving positions and companies even when the salary wasn’t exactly where I wanted to be at the time and it ended up being the best career move I had ever made. Because they weren’t able to meet my exact salary expectations, they were willing to negotiate some of the my other “asks”.

Remember to go into the conversation with an open mind and reasons/facts of why you are asking for what you are asking for.

I hope this post helps those of you currently looking for new jobs or just preparing for an annual review. Always know your worth but be respectable and remember that your boss and your company have their limits too.

The Joy In *Not* Keeping Up With The Joneses

This blog post was inspired by a conversation I was having with my nephew who recently went though a break up. He was reflecting back on the good, the bad, and the ugly of the relationship as most of us do when going through a break up.

One of the things he talked about and really stuck with me is how so many times his ex girlfriend would be scrolling through Instagram and start asking him “why don’t we have xxx?” “When are you going to take me somewhere nice?”. He said it made him feel really bad because the “things” she was talking about and the trips she was admiring was something he just couldn’t afford.

its-okay-not-to-keep-up-with-the-joneses

I was like well first of all you are 20 years old and how dare her make you feel bad. Protective auntie mode definitely came out! But whether you are 20 years old, 30 years old or in your 40’s, we all need to hear this… It is okay not keeping up with the Joneses.

Instagram is a highlight reel and honestly I think the beginning of the year is such a perfect example of it. This time of year, many people are sharing their highlights from the previous year and I think that’s amazing. Good times and wins should be celebrated but I can totally see how the comparison game can come out to play. It can be hard to see baby announcements when you have been trying so hard to have a baby, home purchases when you have been working your butt off just to pay rent, and people taking amazing trips when you just want to have a day off. Trust me, I get it. But remember these 2019 highlight posts are just that, a HIGHLIGHT.

Between every baby announcement is a personal story and maybe even a struggle we do not know about, behind every post about a home purchase and dream vacation is someone working their tail off to get there. We need to remember that.

I know you are working hard too, I know you have been working towards that *fill in the blank*. Whether it’s the vacation or a home or whatever it is, I know you are working hard towards it, but I also know it takes one strangers post to feel discouraged and to start comparing. It’s so easy to see a perfectly curated post and forget that there is a real, human being behind whatever account that you’re following, and forget they are most likely doing the same mundane daily tasks as us.

Repeat after me, “I will not compare my behind-the-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel.”

Trust me, I had struggled with this too at first. When being on social media became a huge part of my job it was so hard not to compare myself to others. I was comparing my chapter one to everyone’s chapter 8.

3 Examples To Re-train Your Mindset When You Find Yourself Comparing Your Behind The Scenes To Someone’s Highlight Reel

  1. When you see someone post about their dream job – tell yourself “Wow, she must have worked so many hours to get there”
  2. When you see a baby announcement when you are struggling with getting pregnant- maybe reach out and ask if they used any special apps to track fertility. Reaching out to to someone on Instagram and them replying back is a reminder that they are human too and maybe they will share some knowledge you had no idea about
  3. When someone shares they are on their dream vacation – happily follow along for any money saving tips they may have used when booking their trip or reach out and ask!

I know these may sound so small and maybe even silly but we must remind ourselves that there is a human going through their own struggles behind each post. If we start to retrain our minds to know that we can have whatever we want and to remember that most people are working just as hard as we are to get whatever they are posting about, it truly changes so much.

And if you still find yourself following along someone’s journey in an envious way, maybe it’s time to unfollow or unsubscribed.

My 2020 Word Of The Year: Connect

Happy 2020 you guys! I was writing a check this morning and I accidentally wrote 2019! It’s gonna take a while to get used to writing 2020 and yes I still write checks LOL.

This is my first post of the new year so I figured I should share what my word of the year is but first I do want to THANK YOU all so much for the love on my last post of 2019, I Did A Thing. Leaving a job I loved so much was definitely a difficult decision but I know it was the best one for my family. I will definitely be talking about it more in Instagram stories in the upcoming weeks but clearly it’s taken me 4 months to process all the feelings! I promise more is to come!

My 2020 Word Of The Year: CONNECT

Last year, my word was “grow”. And by “grow” I mean I wanted “grow” my business, I wanted to “grow” my team (at the office), I wanted to “grow” my relationship with God, etc. I always like writing down all of my goals for the year but I feel like concentrating it all around one word and starting from there makes it seems easier to achieve. It might be all in my head but I will say I feel like it worked last year.

So this year my word is connect. In the midst of so many moving parts last year and my main focus on growing so many aspects of life I feel like I rarely stopped to truly connect with the new relationships that I built or reconnect for that matter on the relationships that mean the most to me. I was simply moving to fast. So this year my goal is to move a little slower allowing me to enjoy each opportunity, conversation, project and person, etc., in the present moment. We hit 100K last year, ya’ll! THANK YOU! But when I was so caught up in everything else I didn’t even realize it until you guys started tagging me in this celebration. Like what?! I had been waiting what it seem like, yeeeeaaaarrrs, to hit 100K and I totally missed it! And at the beginning of 2019, I set a goal of having more date nights with my husband and I ended up having less. I don’t want important moments like this to be the ones I completely miss out on because “I’m too busy”.

I want to connect with you all more. This community is at the top of my list of why I smile everyday! I want to connect with all of my OG readers who have been here since day one and connect with all of the new ones that join us each week. Having the opportunity to have grown the business so much in 2019 is truly a blessing and instead of being obsessed with growing it even more I want to switch my focus on connecting/reconnecting with important relationships, my family, all of you… and as crunchy as it sounds, I need to reconnect with myself.

If you haven’t noticed, I have not updated my bio yet. I’ve erased and tried to rewrite it so many times since I left my corporate job and literally I didn’t even know where to start. I know that might sound so silly to some but honestly the smallest thing like revising ” Hi friends! Roselyn here! Procurement Manager by day, blogger by night and mama & wife 24/7!” to “Hi friends! Roselyn here! Blogger and mama & wife 24/7!” triggered me last month… I thought to myself “Is this enough?”, “Am I enough”, “Is what I am doing enough?”. It’s so silly, I know. Some of my dearest friends are bloggers & mothers and they are the hardest working people I have ever met.

It’s all just a huge adjustment going from 2 jobs (I guess 3 when you count being a mama) and change of mindset for me so yeah, long story short, I definitely need to allow myself time to sit back, reset and reconnect with myself and this new chapter of life.

Don’t get me wrong when I say I want to slow down. I definitely have a lot of business goals for the blog this year but I am just taking a different approach this time around. Crossing my fingers, toes and praying it works. In the end I think it will help me find a new “balance” as well.

So back to being able to “connect” all of my goals back to my word of the year. Here are a few so you can get a better idea of how I do so.

  1. Connect more with this community
  2. Re-connect with my husband – don’t worry fam, we are okay I just need more time with this amazing man! 🙂
  3. Re-connect with my best friends
  4. Truly reconnect with myself in this new chapter of life
  5. More connection with the partnerships I have done in the past that have made me the most happiest. Like any job, there were projects that ended up not really being worth it. Like, no amount of money would make me want to do it again but then there were projects that ended up being more than amazing and allowed me to work with the best, most kind people, that I actually consider friends now! Those are the projects that I want to be a part of and the brands I want you all to be a part of because I know they truly care about their customers.

So, that’s my word word of the year in a nutshell. Do you have a word for 2020? If so, I would absolutely love to hear your message behind it!

Happy 2020 friends! I am so thankful for you all everyday!

I Did A Thing

2019 was quite the year! It was a year of growth and with that came major life changes. We finally finalized our adoption and above everything that 2019 brought us, making our family official was by far the best one of all!

Another thing that happened this year is that I quit my full time corporate job. Quite a few of you have direct messaged me on Instagram asking if I left because I was no longer sharing any stories about work or from my office. The answer is yes. I left at the end of August and honestly it was an extremely hard decision. I loved the company I worked for and I adored my team oh so much! And believe it or not, the individuals that I reported to were amazing as well. I mean how many people can truly say that they loved their boss? I can think of many times in my work history that I did not LOL.

So here I am, almost 4 months later finally telling you all I quit my corporate job because honestly it took me about 3 months to be “okay” with it. Let’s start from the beginning…

Let’s Start From The Beginning….

If you have been following along for some time now, you know that my degree and most of my working life has been in Fashion Merchandising. I worked many jobs for retail, BTS at fashion shows, event planning, trend forecasting, buying, etc. I remember my first assistant buying job in West Hollywood right out of college, I was getting to go to market, working closely with our publicist and getting to meet all the hot celebs to invite them into the boutique to shop. At that time, it was Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, Eva Longoria, etc. It was exactly what I wanted to be doing and got crazy lucky that a job like that was offered to me at 23. See Mom, I told you “Rachel from the show Friends had a real job and I could it it too” LOL. If you are Filipino, you prob already know my Mom wanted me to be a Doctor or Nurse, haha!

Anywho, I worked crazy long hours but that was totally fine since I was a single gal and didn’t have a significant other or kids to worry about. From there, I went on to work as a Merchandising Manager than followed a “love” to Houston. Read more of that story here. That blog post is called, Thank you, Next if that tells you anything LOL. I decided to stay in Houston after that chapter in my life because I had made such good friends here, job market wasn’t great in California at the time and there was potential for me to grow at my company.

The Middle

From that job I worked 2 other retail buying jobs. The more I got promoted, the more hours I would work. Again, that was totally fine when I didn’t have a husband or family to worry about but by this point Brandon and I were married, wanting to travel more and wanted to start a family. I should also mentioned that Brandon worked so many hours too. Also during this time I ended up getting promoted to Associate Buyer and really disliked the 2 people I reported to. I mean, I really hate to say that but when you are working your tail off and the people you report to make your life miserable you start to think “why am I working so hard again?”. I truly began to dislike going to work everyday.

Fast forward….I ended up getting a phone call from a recruitment agency about a job in Supply Chain Management. My resume had been floating around on LinkedIn from years prior and this recruiter just happened to run across it and asked me to come in to speak with them and then interview with the company. I never thought about moving from retail buying to Supply Chain Management but honestly thought this moment was totally a God thing. I hadn’t been looking but I had been praying.

The End..

In 2014, I got hired on as a Buyer for said company. It was for a category that I wasn’t super familiar with but since I did have an extensive history of buying, supplier management and negotiations they took a chance on me. And with the help of an amazing team and vendors, I was up to speed in no time. I have never loved a company or coworkers so much. That’s when I knew that call from the recruitment agency was totally a God thing.

During my first few months at my company the blog was born. Although, I loved my position, my management, my colleagues and my vendors I still really craved taking about fashion and trends on the daily so that is when I decided to create the blog. Not a clue how to create one and no intentions on making money from it but just wanted to write and create.

In less than a year, I was interviewing for a Management position. Ummm, way sooner than I even anticipated but circumstances happened and it seemed like everything that happened lead me to that moment. Honestly, I wasn’t even thinking about moving to management at that point but after thinking about it and talking to colleagues about it I decided to apply and interview.

I got the job. I had to hire to fill my position and with the existing team members and my direct manager, I felt like I was working with this dream team. I loved going to work, I adored every single person that I worked with. I loved developing my team, I wanted everyone to succeed and when they did I felt like a proud Mom and that was the best feeling of all.

Fast forward to 2018 – the blog was thriving which meant more late nights and early mornings to work before and after my 8-5 corporate job. Also, by January 2018 I was a mama for a whole 3 months 🙂

I will skip all of the conversations Brandon and I have had to have a few times but the gist of it is that I was doing too much. My husband has and always will be my biggest supporter but when we became parents he knew some things had to change a bit. Brandon had to finally sit me down and say “are you planning on cutting back on either of these jobs?” which had me stop and think “no, no I hadn’t thought about stopping anything.” I wanted to be best the Manager, best wife, and best Mom all while building my own business. Trust me, I’ve listened to many podcasts trying to motivate me that “I could do it all” but in reality something’s always gotta give and I wasn’t willing to make that my family life.

So I started a list of pros and cons for both jobs. Believe it or not my lists were neck and neck. I cannot stress enough of how much I loved the company I worked for. But in the end flexibility of running the blog and being able to be home more with Landon won.

March 2018 I finally told Brandon I had made my decision. He was happy with it. A few months later one of my team members shared that she was retiring so I had to make sure that position was filled before she left. That actually took a little longer as I ended up hiring someone and having to let them go and then searched for another person.

I then started building another long list of all the things I wanted to do before I left like: get the entire team in a good place in case they didn’t find my replacement for a few months, finish all program implementations we had in progress, renewing supplier contracts, securing new supplier contracts, ensure that my team was going to complete their 2018 goals, etc. My list went on and on! Oh and on top of that I had a personal goal that I wanted to match my annual salary with my blog income before I left.

Ya’ll December 2018 came and I still had a long list of things I wanted to do. In hindsight I know it was because I kinda, really didn’t want to leave my company LOL.

Here we were March 2019, Brandon being the patient and amazing husband he is hadn’t really pushed the issue between Jan 2018 and now because he knew all the things I wanted to accomplish before I put in my notice. But 14 months was the limit ya’ll LOL. He had so much going on at work and to be completely transparent we didn’t need my income to survive. Let alone, my 2 incomes. I say that because you can understand his “WTF babe?” conversation at this point. I was actually working harder and more since we had the initial conversation in 2018.

We decided the very last “thing to do” was finalize our adoption with Landon and once we found out our final court date I would put in my notice at work. This way, everything would be final, we could travel any time and anywhere with Landon without having to get permission from a family court judge. At that time, I could be at home more with Landon and really just have one other job of running the blog. We received the final court date at the end of July and a week later I had put in my 30 day notice. So, so hard ya’ll.

I tell you all this long a** life story because it’s all part of why it was so hard for me to leave this last job. Throughout my career I have been blessed with great experiences, learned so much even between all of the evil colleagues LOL. I was finally at a place I loved so much and getting paid for it! It was the best team I had worked with, the best company I had worked for and I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life and walk away from it. And trust me, they didn’t make it easy!

Why Did It Take Me Several Months To Share That I Quit My Corporate Job?

I have drafted this post so many times. I have titled this post so many things.

1- Will This Be “Enough”? I didn’t know if I would feel completely fulfilled not working at a corporate office. Not getting up everyday with the routine I had known for years and years. Not being able to develop my team any longer, not getting to celebrate wins with the department. For months, 3 months you guys, I didn’t know if this is what I truly wanted.

2- I Didn’t Want Anyone To Feel Bad– I belong to a lot of small business and blogging groups where many individuals are yearning to get out of their 8-5 and run their blog full time. I didn’t want anyone to be mad that I was going on and on about how I had an amazing 8-5 and had a hard time leaving.

Ya’ll it took me 3 whole months to finally feel like I made the right decision. I talked to my best girlfriends that are also in the business many a times and they gave me the best pep talks. The best advice? “You worked your a** off to get here, you should be shouting that from the roof tops”.

So here I am, end of 2019 and finally sharing this huge news with you all. Sorry not sorry for the novel but I needed you all to know it wasn’t a “I’m out!” moment for me. I’m still trying to figure out what the “work from home” schedule is for me. The previous normal for me was 9pm-4am working hours before heading into the office LOL. But above all, I am able to be present and home more with Landon.

I could make this post about 25,000 words longer but I’ll give you back some time 🙂 Feel free to ask any questions below.

Oh one last thing – one of the questions that I got on DM’s when some of you asked about me leaving my job is if I’ll be sharing work stuff still. I will most definitely still be sharing work wear and all the work related things still. It’s really one of my most favorite things to share and this will give me more time to share more intentional work posts.

If you follow along on Instagram or Facebook, you have seen me share that Stage and Gordmans are partnering up with St.Jude this season to raise money to help fight childhood cancers and pediatric diseases. Landon and I are more than honored to help spread the word about the #BearsThatCare campaign. From November 1-December 31, Stage and Gordmans will donate $1 to St.Jude for each Instagram feed post using the #BearsthatCare hashtag. And if you purchase one of these sweet, cuddly bears in store or online, $2 will be donated. I told Landon we would be helping someone if we bought a bear and he grabbed 5 🙂

8 Medicine Cabinet Essentials To Care For A Sick Toddler

Today I am partnering up with Walmart to share our cold season essentials and what we have learned works for Landon when he feeling is under the weather. These things have proven to work for us but every child is different so if any questions, always consult with your child’s physician.

I remember the first month that we enrolled Landon into daycare. Literally that whole month I feel like he could not keep him from catching whatever was being brought into daycare that day. He got sick, I got sick, he got sick, I got sick. Ugh! That was not a dance I wanted to continue to do! So, of course, as a newbie Mom would, I was calling his pediatrician every other day (she was probably regretting telling me to call her if I had any questions) and googling everything! I am so thankful I finally found things that worked for our sweet boy!

zarbees-all-natural-medicine-for-toddlers

8 Essentials To Care For A Sick Toddler

1. Vick’s Cool Mist Humidifier – The cool mist humidifiers are preferred over warm mist humidifiers because cool mist shrinks the nasal passages, making it easier to breathe, versus heat swelling the already sensitive nasal passages.  We use ours during nap time and bed time. Also, the version we have can double as a night light.

2. Zarbee’s Soothing Chest Rub– This petroleum free rub has eucalyptus, lavender and beeswax. Made with naturally soothing ingredients. We rub this lightly on Landon’s chest, back and bottom of feet when he seems to be super congested. I was laughing so hard when I took the picture below because clearly Landon knows the drill.

3. NoseFrida – I’ve talked about the NoseFrida product before in this blog post! This snot sucker sounds gross and looks gross too, lol, but really this thing works so great! It works way better than the old school nose bulb looking thing that our parents had to use on us!

4. Zarbee’s Cough Syrup & Mucus – I have become a huge fan of the Zarbee’s products. I give this cough syrup with organic agave syrup and english ivy leaf to Landon when he has a bad cough and you can hear that mucus build up. This cough syrup helps clear mucus and calms coughs.

5. Zarbee’s Soothing Saline Mist with Aloe – This Soothing Saline Nasal Mist safely & gently moisturizes, cleans, & helps flushes out noses. This moisturizing mist with gentle aloe contains no harsh ingredients.

6. Puff’s Plus Lotion Tissues – I used to use regular wipes and boogie wipes to wipe my toddler’s running nose. Although those both work amazingly for everyday boogs, having a damp cloth on your face a hundred times a day when you are sick and not feeling well does not feel really great so I decided to swap those out for the Puff’s Plus Lotion Tissues that get the job done, are dry and do not leave your child with an irritated nose because they are so soft.

My last 2 essentials are things that I started giving Landon to build up his immunity system and keep it strong. I have seen a major difference with his less common colds. Mama even started taking Elderberry!

7. Zarbee’s Immune Support and Vitamins – If I hear someone is sick at school or a party we just left, or if I feel like I am getting sick or if we are hopping on a plane, Landon is getting some of this! Baby Immune Support + Vitamins delivers with 200% daily value of vitamin C plus other essentials.

8. Zarbee’s Elderberry Immune Support– This also comes in liquid form but when I give the gummy ones to Landon he thinks he’s getting like a gummy bear treat so I’m gonna roll with it LOL. Elderberries have long been used in food and drink for their immune-supportive properties. The Zarbee’s Elderberry Immune Support delivers with a extra concentrated burst of elderberry extract plus vitamins.

So there you have it friends! The 8 essentials that help us care for our sick toddler can all be found on Walmart.com or at your local store! Do you use any of these products on your kids? What other items are a must have in you medicine cabinet?

Casual Family Photos: Fila Dad Sneakers For The Whole Family

Just because they are called “Dad sneakers” doesn’t mean only Brandon gets to rock them! 🙂 The DSW team sent over these matching Fila sneakers once we finalized our adoption with Landon as a congratulations gift. They all have been so amazing through this journey and getting a sweet gift so that we could all match was icing on the cake. We feel extremely blessed to have formed such a great friendship from what started as a business partnership!

Every time I put Landon’s Fila sneakers on him he tells me they are his fast shoes and takes off running lol! He also try to take off running during this photoshoot so that is why I am holding him in most of the photos! Haha #truth

Goodness, looking at these pictures are making me realize how tall Landon is getting! He’s growing by the second! Next photo shoot he might be carrying me lol!

Spanx can do no wrong in my eyes! I know I talk about the Spanx faux leather leggings all the time but if you are looking for a gateway pair that doesn’t cost $98 you should try this style! I love the fun leopard print and I dressed this look up with the Evereve Dolce Vita booties but you could also wear this look with sneakers for an equally cute look! For size reference, I am wearing a small in the Free People sweater and a medium in the Spanx leggings.

I am obsessed with the vibrant blue color of this dress! I think this dress would be super cute with over the knee boots and a belt too but the chic black bootie makes it perfect for a chic work wear outfit. You could also throw on some black tights! I feel like the blue really pops in these photos but honestly it’s even prettier in real life!

I am wearing asize small in in the dress and true size 7 in the booties.

Dressing Up Basics With The Right Accessories

It’s amazing what a show stopper boot, hat and belt can do to an outfit! I wore this same Express waffle knit sweater with leggings one day and literally got no questions. A few days later I paired the same sweater with skinny jeans, over the knee boots and my ride or die hat and so many people asked me where I got my sweater! lol

I’ve shared these Good American jeans on my stories many times because the fit is so amazing! I was living in my Madewell denim before these but I think those have definitely been replaced! The stretch on the Good American denim is so spot on and they are so flattering!

Also, I always get asked about my Gucci dupe belt but every time they restock, they literally sell out or get taken down within minutes! I’ll continue to share when I see it stocked but if you are looking for another option this Express belt is a great one!
