Makeup Primer Empties: Love It Or Leave It?

Trust me, I used to be a non believer when it came to makeup primer. I thought it was such an unnecessary step in my makeup routine! It wasn’t until I received a free primer in a gift with purchase deal, I was finally willing to try. Well, let me tell you. I am now a believer. Makeup primers help makeup go on smoother and stay on longer. Today I am sharing some primers I have personally used these past months and giving you my honest opinion on if they worked out for my skin type or not!

I always like to preface these type of posts reiterating that everyone’s skin type is different and just because a particular item did not work for me doesn’t mean it’s a bad product. I really do like all 3 of these brands but one of the primers just did not work for me!

My skin type: My face skin type is normal to dry. Pretty normal but I do get dry spots in certain areas and always worse in the colder seasons.

Makeup Primer Empties: Love It Or Leave It?

Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer: “An oil-free primer with a silky, airy texture that leaves a smooth canvas for makeup, while reducing the look of redness, pores, and wrinkles.

  • Paraben-free; sulfate-free; phthalate-free; oil-free; gluten-free; fragrance-free; synthetic dye-free
  • Cruelty-free
  • Vegan
  • Made in the USA

Finish: Formulated cream with a super lightweight, silky texture that helps create a smooth canvas without feeling oily.

How To Use: Apply 1/2 to 1 pump of Veil Mineral Primer to clean, moisturized skin prior to concealer, foundation and powder application. It works with any cream, liquid or powder foundation.

My Opinion: I don’t know what kind of fairy dust Hourglass is working with at headquarters but this will definitely be a repurchase for me! It makes my complexion look healthy and bright, whether I wear it alone or under foundation! Works extremely well on my dry spots too! After trying to figure out what makes this makeup primer so amazing I did read that the Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer contains super-fine microspheric powder that creates this one-of-a-kind texture. I wouls highly recommend this one.

You can grab the mini size for $20 at Sephora to try out!

Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r: “A shine-stopping, pore-diffusing primer that smooths the way for better foundation application and longer wear with an instant retouch effect.

  • Cruelty Free
  • No Parabens
  • No Phthalates

Finish: Lightweight with a matte finish.

How To Use: Take one pump, start at the center of your face and blend outward. Artistry tip: If you have dry skin, apply primer to just the areas of your face that tend to get oily.

My Opinion: Although this primer does very well at hiding pores and smoothing out skin texture, it was way too drying on my skin. Honestly, I should have shyed away from the product after reading it was a mattifying primer because with dry skin that usually does not go well! Even with the artistry tip of only putting this primer on your t-zone, this primer formula just did not work for me and seemed too drying. If you tend to get a little shine or your skin type is more on the oily side I think this would be a great primer to try! However, this not a product for us gals with skin on the drier side. Also, it does have a slight fragrance which did not bother me but if you are sensitive to smells just keep that in mind.

You can try out this primer in a mini size for $16 here.

Tula Face Filter Primer:TULA’s Face Filter Blurring & Moisturizing Primer will give you a fresh-faced, vacation-worthy glow. Apply after moisturizer and before foundation to smooth the look of redness and uneven skin tone.

  • Cruelty free
  • Formulated without Parabens, Sulfates, Phthalates, Mineral Oil & Petrolatum, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Releasing Preservatives, Triclosan, Retinol,  Gluten, Fragrance

How To Use: Apply 2-3 pumps of this moisturizing primer & massage thoroughly to release its special skin-blurring properties. Use as the last step in skincare routine/before applying foundation.

My Opinion: This moisturizing primer definitely deserves all the hype it gets! A lot of you have reached out to me to ask if Tula, in general, is worth the hype. Honestly, not all of the products have worked for me. Again, everyone’s skin type is different! But this is definitely a product I have repurchased multiple times! It’s basically a real life face filter LOL. It helps blur out any imperfections and redness but also contains superfoods like chia seeds and licorice that helps nourish skin and keep moisturized all day long. It’s slightly tinted as well so can be worn alone on your no makeup days! If ya’ll want to try it out you can grab it directly from the Tula website using my code ROSELYN for 15% off!

Let me know if you have tried any of these products or if you have a favorite filter that I didn’t list! I love trying out new ones 🙂

  1. I typically skip beauty posts because I have a great beauty routine that has worked for me for 25+ years. However, I recently (last two years) started battling rosacea, and I received a free sample of primer with a makeup order from Nordstrom. I like the way it helps camouflage the redness, so when I saw this post was on primer, I read it. I ordered the Tula. Thanks!

  2. I absolutely agree with your assessments!! Hourglass is amazing!! BUT TULA has been my #1 go-to/must have for about two years. It helps repair your skin as well!
