8 Unwritten Office Rules

Happy Tuesday beauties!

This past weekend was a bit busy with work events and I was out of the office for a work/charity golf tournament yesterday so I apologize for the day late post! Today I am sharing another great work wear look plus 8 office rules that aren’t exactly written in your employee handbook but should definitely be followed!

8 Unwritten Office Rules

1- Use your inside voice – There is nothing more distracting than overhearing someone’s every phone call conversation. Be aware of your inside voice. Everyone doesn’t need to what you are ordering for lunch that day.

2- Clean up after yourself in the office kitchen or break room – I always hear people saying “I wonder what their house looks like if they leave a mess like this here”. Well, honestly that person’s house probably looks fine because they probably clean up after themselves at home! Clean up after yourself likes it’s your own kitchen. Just because a cleaning service comes to clean your office daily or even weekly doesn’t mean you leave your splattered soup all over the microwave. C’mon people, we are adults.

3- Silence your cell phone or at least have it on a low volume ringer– Look, I have a special place in my heart when I hear someone’s ringtone and it’s a song that I love but not everyone wants to hear “Call Me Maybe” every time you get a phone call. Be respectful of the shared office space

4- If you set up a meeting be cognizant of everyone’s time and the topic at hand – Draft and think about your talking points. Do you really need a full hour or can it be shortened to 30 minutes? Everyone is busy so just be sure you are sensitive to everyone’s valuable time.

5- Don’t take food out of the fridge that isn’t yours– why is this a thing at every office? And who are you food thief? I’ve actually had this happen to me and it’s the strangest thing! First of all it’s rude. Secondly, you don’t know if that person is sick or anything like that. Just don’t do this.

6- Keep your space clean– Whether you are in a cubicle or an office, no one wants to see a messy work space. It also may give people a bad impression of you as not only a messy but unorganized employee.

7- What you wear matters – This is so important you guys. First impressions are lasting impressions. You don’t have to spend a ton of money to look put together and clean. I try to share a lot of affordable work wear options here on the blog because dressing appropriately and professionally for work is so important. Dress codes vary from industry to industry so check out what your colleagues are wearing and take a cue from people you look up to.

8- Don’t hover over someone’s desk or stare at their computer screen when talking to them. – Helllooo nosey rosie! Even if you can’t read what is on their computer screen, it still makes you look nosey.

I know some of these unwritten rules seem silly to some but you’d be surprised how many times I wish I could just print and post this up at each of the offices I have worked at. Just a friendly reminder to not be that person 🙂
