10 Things Every Career Girl Needs To Know

Happy Monday loves!

I had a whole 6 hours of sleep the past 2 days so I’m going to need a lot of coffee today. I have no idea why I haven’t been able to sleep but I think Claritin D has something to do with it. I told Brandon that it makes me feel like I’m on drugs. I know it sounds kind of funny but seriously it gives me major energy like I need to do 17 things at once. I stopped taking it last month but last week my allergies (thanks Texas!) have been through the roof so I had to take it again as no other allergy medicine has been able to help. If you have any other remedies, let your girl know!

Today I am talking about the 10 things that every working woman should know. I could go on and on about this topic but today I am listing the 10 things I think are most important.

1. You know the old saying “dress for the job you want, not the job you have”? Well, listen to it. Having a wardrobe that makes you feel confident is important. I know that when I feel good, I am a better worker. I’m not going to lie, some days I am not feeling my outfit, hair or makeup I don’t really want to talk to anyone, haha.
2. Do not and I repeat DO NOT engage in office drama. You can be the smartest, most qualified candidate in the building but engaging in office drama will associate you in a category you don’t want to be a part of if you plan on growing professionally.
3. Learn something from every single person you work with. The good and the “bad”. There is so much to be learned from observing your peers. I am fortunate enough to work with a great group of Managers and Directors. Every one has their own style of managing things and I love using tips from them that I think would blend well with my managing style as well. As far as learning from “the bad”, think back to a peer or boss that you had and were miserable working with. If all that you learned from them is “don’t be like that”, that’s more than enough!
4. Take ownership if you mess up. I know you are a total boss babe but no one is perfect so if you do mess something up own up to it. Everyone makes mistakes and blaming someone or something else is not cool.
5. Proof read your emails ladies and then read them again. I dedicated a whole blog post to this topic because it’s so important. An email may be the first impression someone gets from you and it represents your professionalism. Your recipient may have never met you in person or spoke to you on the phone. 6. See the value in every position. I pride myself in building relationships and learning something from everyone. I’ve been in a corporate environment for approximately 10 years (dang, I’m getting old) and far too often I see peers not respecting and appreciating the “field” employees as much as they should.
7. Never tell your boss you can’t do something. There have been many times when I have left a meeting with my boss thinking “how am I going to do that?” or “how in the world am I going to get that done”? But not once did I express that to them. Have a can do attitude and draft your game plan before you assume you can’t do it. You can do anything girl.
8. Collaborate. This goes back to number 7 and I think I have shared this quote before because I have it in my office but “You can get almost anything done if you don’t care who gets the credit for it.” You know that project you thought would be impossible to do? Well, I bet you a million bucks you can get it done with a little collaboration!
9. Oversharing personal stories at work. Insert straight face emoji here. Look, I am super friendly and love a good conversation but there have been a few times where I think to myself, “why did they just tell me that?” Know what to share and with who.
10. Do not burn bridges when you leave a company. I don’t care how unhappy you are or how much you think you dislike a company, DO NOT BURN THOSE BRIDGES. It is such a small world and it is most likely that you will cross paths with an old colleague again. Even, if you didn’t work directly with them. People talk and you don’t want a bad reputation because you left the building like a lose canon. 🙂 Stay classy my friends. Even when someone is really pushing those buttons.
