Hilltop Gardens is a tropical healing garden and organic farm located in South Texas and Northern Mexico along the Rio Grande River. Founded in 1939 by Lee and Sherman Ewald, Hilltop Gardens, among the first commercial Aloe vera farms in the U.S., started on 100 acres north of LaVilla. Lee Ewald recognized the medical properties of Aloe vera and pioneered its commercial production in the Rio Grande Valley. Hilltop Gardens was incorporated in 1959 and became part of the global health industry. Lee developed cosmetics using Aloe vera gel with the help of her two daughters. She sold this under the name Phyllis Ann Lee Sales, incorporated in 1962. Hilltop Gardens is believed to be the first business using Aloe vera gel as an ingredient in cosmetics. The Ewald family sold Hilltop Gardens in 1976 to R.C. Benson who moved from Houston to grow Aloe vera, by 1981, Benson was growing over 200,000 Aloe plants on the property.

Today, the 720 acre organic farm is open to the general public. Some of the attractions include The Inn at Hilltop, Memorial Aloe Garden, Healing Garden, Sensory Walk and a Children’s Garden.

I mean I don’t know about you but visiting this organic farm has been added to my list of things to do!

Okay so let’s talk skincare products. My skin type is combination but more on the dry side so I am always looking for hydrating products that don’t feel heavy on my skin.

Aloe Vera Anti Aging Cream ($18)- This cream provides anti-oxidants that help smooth the appearance of fine lines. It’s so light and leaves your skin feeling so smooth.

Aloe Vera Eucalyptus Gel ($13)- Because of my dry skin I especially love the aloe vera eucalyptus gel. The gel is extremely moisturizing but not heavy so I can wear it under the anti aging cream at night and wake up to radiant skin.

Aloe Vera Moisturizer ($16)- This product has botanical oil that intensively moisturizes, promotes skin elasticity and helps restore irritated skin. I will apply this with an SPF vitamin C serum for AM and all day wear.

Aloe Vera Ointment ($17)- This is perfect for sensitive skin. It’s rich in aloe vera, sunflower seed oil, citrus fruit oil and licorice root extracts. I love applying this after a day in the sun for some cooling hydration.

The Hilltop Gardens team also sent over aloe vera shampoo, conditioner and body wash but I haven’t had a chance to try them just yet but I am excited too. I will definitely update you guys on my thoughts when I do!

If you have been looking for aloe vera enriched skincare products I can definitely recommend the items above. Let me know if you have any questions. You know I am always happy to answer them!

xo, Roselyn

  1. I have similar skin. Combo, but more on the dry side. I will have to look into these.
